Short description
The Vatican Tapes follows Angela Holmes, a young woman whose life takes a disturbing turn after a minor injury. People around her begin to suffer severe harm, and some die. A local priest, Father Lozano, becomes convinced that Angela is possessed, and the Vatican sends two clergymen, Vicar Imani and Cardinal Bruun, to carry out an exorcism. They soon find that the force inside her is far older and more resistant than they anticipated. The story is framed around a video recording said to have leaked from the Catholic Church's archives in Vatican City, showing an exorcism that goes badly wrong.
Mark Neveldine directed the film, his fifth feature after Crank, Crank: High Voltage, Gamer and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and his first since 2011. Christopher Borrelli and Michael C. Martin wrote the screenplay. Olivia Taylor Dudley plays Angela, with Michael Peña as Father Lozano, Peter Andersson as Cardinal Bruun, Djimon Hounsou as Vicar Imani and Kathleen Robertson as Doctor Richards. The film runs 91 minutes.
Made for about 8 million dollars and released in July 2015, the film took roughly 13 million dollars worldwide. Audiences were unenthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 4.7 out of 10 from around 20,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 out of 10 from 837 votes. A critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 46 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The screenplay for this film was included in the 'Black List' of the best unproduced screenplays of 2009.
- Percussionist and Slipknot founder Shawn Crahan played a cameo role in the film, although he is not credited. He played the role of the man being interviewed by the reporter at the end of the film. Crahan and Mark Neveldine are friends. They previously worked together on the film "Officer Down" (2016).
- When the father is riding in a taxi and talking to his daughter, in one shot the phone is vertical, in the next it’s horizontal, and then it’s visible that the phone is vertical again.
