Short description
What's Love Got to Do with It tells the story of Anna Mae Bullock, a young woman from Tennessee who becomes the singer Tina Turner. Raised by her grandmother and drawn to music from an early age, she meets the charismatic musician Ike Turner, who recognizes her talent and makes her the voice of his band. The pair marry and reach the top of the music world together, but their success comes at a cost. Ike grows jealous of her popularity and turns violent and controlling, and their marriage becomes a cycle of abuse and humiliation. Tina eventually finds the courage to break away, rebuilding her life and career on her own terms. The film is based on Tina Turner's autobiography.
Brian Gibson directed the film, which sits between Poltergeist II: The Other Side and The Juror in his four credited features, from a screenplay by Kate Lanier. Angela Bassett plays Tina, with Laurence Fishburne as Ike. Made for about 15 million dollars, it took roughly 39 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from 27,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1/10 from 384 votes; critics gave it 7.5/10 across 59 reviews, close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Laurence Fishburne turned down the role of Ike Turner (1931-2007) five times. He only agreed when he learned that Angela Bassett would be playing Tina Turner.
- Angela Bassett simply lip-synced to the songs featured in the film. All the songs were performed by Tina Turner herself. According to Bassett, she can act and dance, but she has trouble with singing.
- Laurence Fishburne provided the vocals for Ike Turner.
- Actress Vanessa Bell Calloway played the role of Jackie, with whom Tina Turner shared an interest in Buddhism. She is a true Christian and therefore felt some discomfort at having to recite Buddhist prayers during filming. Director Brian Gibson (1944-2004) allowed her to simply articulate the words, rather than say them, and the sound was then simply dubbed over the footage.
- Holly Berry and Whitney Houston (1963-2012) were also contenders for the role of Tina Turner.
- During the filming of the first domestic violence scene, Angela Bassett was injured. Falling from the high back of the sofa, she put her hands forward to cushion the impact and suffered a fracture in her right hand.
- The house shown in Los Angeles – as well as the original furniture and decor – actually belonged to Ike and Tina Turner.
