If Only is a romantic fantasy drama about Ian Wyndham, a British businessman living in London whose life revolves around his job. His girlfriend Samantha, an American studying violin in the city, is impulsive and emotionally open, and she grows frustrated that Ian struggles to show his feelings or commit to their future. After an argument between them, Samantha dies in a road accident, leaving Ian devastated and convinced he should have done more to prove his love. He then wakes to find himself living that same day again, and he tries to alter the choices that led to her death.
The film was directed by Gil Junger, whose earlier work includes 10 Things I Hate About You and Black Knight; it is the third of the seven features he directed, followed later by titles such as Beauty & the Briefcase and Think Like a Dog. Christina Welsh wrote the screenplay, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays Samantha, also served as a producer alongside Jeffrey Silver and Robert F. Newmyer. Paul Nicholls plays Ian, with Tom Wilkinson, Diana Hardcastle, Lucy Davenport and Roy Sampson in supporting roles.
Released in January 2004, the film is a British-American co-production with a running time of 92 minutes. It earned about 3 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 674 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 4.8 out of 10 from 2,106 reviews, a gap that suggests audiences responded to it more warmly than reviewers did.
