Louder Than Bombs

Three years after the death of his wife Isabelle, a celebrated war photographer, Gene Reed is raising his teenage son Conrad on his own in a New York suburb. The two have drifted apart, and Gene struggles to reach the withdrawn boy. When a major exhibition of Isabelle's work is organized in New York, her older son Jonah, now an adult with a family of his own, returns to the family home. For the first time in years, father and sons live under one roof, each carrying a different memory of the woman they lost.

Joachim Trier directed and wrote the screenplay with Eskil Vogt, following Reprise (2006) and Oslo, August 31st (2011) in his filmography. Gabriel Byrne plays Gene, Isabelle Huppert appears as Isabelle, Jesse Eisenberg is Jonah, and Devin Druid is Conrad, with Amy Ryan and Ruby Jerins among a cast of 45. The production, a Danish, Norwegian, American and French co-production, had a budget of 11 million dollars and returned about 1 million worldwide.

Critics rated the film 7 out of 10 across 129 reviews. Audiences were less enthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from 391 votes.
