Cherry 2000

In a version of 2017, wealthy city dweller Sam Treadwell lives with Cherry 2000, a discontinued android wife who fills the role of a devoted partner. When Cherry breaks down and no replacement parts can be found, Sam has her intact memory chip but no body to put it in. Rather than pair up with a woman from his own social world, where relationships are arranged through detailed contracts, he hires E. Johnson, a tracker operating outside the law, to help him reach the lawless Zone in search of another unit of the same model. The journey takes him far from the sheltered world he knows.

Steve De Jarnatt directed, working from a screenplay by Michael Almereyda; Edward R. Pressman and Caldecot Chubb produced. The film came between De Jarnatt's Tarzana and Miracle Mile in his directing career. Melanie Griffith plays E. Johnson, David Andrews plays Sam, Pamela Gidley plays Cherry 2000, and Ben Johnson, Marshall Bell and Harry Carey, Jr. appear in supporting roles.

Made for about 10 million dollars, the film runs 99 minutes. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 21 reviews, while on TMDB it averages 5.9 out of 10 from 287 votes, so viewers there rate it more generously than the critics do.
