Bring It On
Short description
Bring It On follows Torrance Shipman, who has just been made captain of the cheerleading squad at Rancho Carne High School in San Diego. The Toros have won the national championship for six years running, and Torrance expects to keep the streak alive. She then learns that the squad's routines were not created by the team at all, but taken from another group. With the national competition approaching, she and her teammates have to come up with an original routine, while the squad they copied, led by Isis, faces its own struggle to reach the event.
The film was directed by Peyton Reed, the second of the eight features listed for him, arriving between The Love Bug and Down with Love, from a screenplay by Jessica Bendinger, with Marc Abraham and Thomas A. Bliss producing. Kirsten Dunst plays Torrance, Eliza Dushku and Jesse Bradford appear as Missy and Cliff Pantone, and Gabrielle Union plays Isis. It was released in August 2000 and runs 99 minutes.
Made for about 28 million dollars, it took roughly 90 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.2 from about 114,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from some 1,920 votes; critics rated it 6 out of 10 across 126 reviews, close to the audience scores, indicating a generally favorable but not enthusiastic reception on both sides.
What's left behind the scenes
- Vintage t-shirts featuring rock bands were taken from an extensive collection assembled by the film's director, Peyton Reed.
- Of all the cheerleaders in the squad during filming, only Kirsten Dunst, Rini Bell, and Brandy Williams were teenagers. Everyone else was over 20. The oldest was Gabrielle Union, at 27 years old.
- The film used the California State University, San Diego campus as the high school.
- The cheerleaders from the Toros and Clovers squads dance with bare midriffs, which is actually strictly prohibited by the rules.
- Scenes in the Toros cheerleading gym were filmed inside the Immaculate Conception Academy (a Catholic all-girls school) in San Diego.
- There is a ban on performing many program elements in school competitions that are used by girls.
