Nowhere in Africa

Nowhere in Africa follows a Jewish family who leave Germany in 1938 and settle in Kenya, where Walter Redlich has taken work on a remote farm after giving up his career as a lawyer. His wife Jettel struggles to accept their reduced circumstances and the unfamiliar surroundings, while their five-year-old daughter Regina adapts quickly, learns the local language and forms a close bond with the household cook, Owuor. The strain of displacement and the distance between the parents puts their marriage under pressure.

Caroline Link directed and co-wrote the film with Susanne Liebetrau, and it was produced by Bernd Eichinger, Michael Weber and Peter Herrmann. It is the earliest of the three features Link has directed, ahead of When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (2019) and Die Jahre mit dir (2027). The cast includes Juliane Köhler as Jettel, Merab Ninidze as Walter, Sidede Onyulo as Owuor and Matthias Habich as Süßkind, with Lea Kurka and Karoline Eckertz playing Regina at different ages across a credited cast of 25. The film runs 140 minutes.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.5/10 from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 7/10 from roughly 195 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9/10 from 101 reviews is higher than both audience scores, indicating stronger approval from reviewers than from the wider viewing public.
