In Toronto, word has spread that the world will end at midnight on New Year's Day, and the city's residents have had two months to absorb the news. The initial panic has given way to resignation, and people are now trying to arrange a fitting final evening. Patrick Wheeler, a grieving widower, wants to spend the remaining hours alone, while those around him have other ideas. His friend Craig is determined to act out long-held fantasies before time runs out, Sandra has reached an agreement with her husband Duncan that shapes her last night, and Patrick's sister Jennifer gathers her family for one final meal. Across the city, strangers fill the streets with prayer, celebration and disorder, each preparing in their own way for whatever midnight brings.
Don McKellar directed, wrote and stars in the film, his first as director; his second, The Grand Seduction, followed in 2014. The cast includes Sarah Polley as Jennifer, Sandra Oh as Sandra, Roberta Maxwell and Robin Gammell as Patrick's parents, and Trent McMullen as Alex, among 29 credited performers. Made for about 2 million USD, it was a Canadian and French co-production.
On IMDb the film holds 7.1/10 from around 11,000 votes, while a smaller TMDB audience gives it 6.7/10 from 172 votes. Critics were warmer still, rating it 7.5/10 across 52 reviews.
