Short description
Hitman centres on Agent 47, a contract killer who works for a secret organization and carries the number on a barcode tattooed at the back of his neck. Trained to be efficient and anonymous, he takes on a job tied to a political figure in Russia and is betrayed by the people who sent him. Wanted by Interpol and Russian forces and pursued across Eastern Europe, he has to stay alive while working out who set him up and why.
Filmed by Xavier Gens and written by Skip Woods, the film is based on the video game series of the same name. It was released in November 2007 and was Gens's second time in the director's chair, following Frontier(s) the same year. Timothy Olyphant plays Agent 47, with Dougray Scott as Mike Whittier, Olga Kurylenko as Nika Boronina, Robert Knepper as Yuri Marklov and Ulrich Thomsen as Mikhail Belicoff. Charles Gordon, Pierre-Ange Le Pogam and Adrian Askarieh produced; 55 cast members and 53 crew are credited.
Made for 24 million dollars, the film took about 101 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from 186,000 votes; on TMDB it also holds 6.2 out of 10, from 3,774 votes. A critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 across 104 reviews places it well below both audience scores, suggesting viewers were more receptive than reviewers.

- Vin Diesel is an executive producer of the film and was originally supposed to play the role of Agent 47.
- The role of St. Petersburg's "Central" railway station in the film was played by Moscow's "Kyiv" station, but only from the outside. The interior was filmed in Sofia.
- Timothy Olyphant's character wears a Rolex GMT Master II watch.
- The duration of the director's cut of the film is 94 minutes.
- When the bullet hits the president in the head, a man in a blue jacket is clearly visible in the background. A second later, when a wide shot is shown, he is gone.
- The photographer in the white vest is seen in different locations during frame changes – sometimes he is in front of the theater entrance, and sometimes a few meters in front of the president.
- The hero would not have been able to pick up the automatic weapons from the table so skillfully – firstly, in the preceding frames they were not lying in the center of the table, but at the edges; secondly, a pile of other weapons was lying between them, which, by the way, disappears during the frame change (00:58:19).
- In one of the film's scenes, several FSB officers can be noticed. However, the abbreviation is written incorrectly – the letter 'C' on their jackets is reversed.
- The film is based on the “Hitman” series of computer games (2000 – present, IO Interactive).
- The design of the special forces equipment was borrowed from “Werewolf” (1999) and “Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Corps” (1991).
- David Bateson, who voiced Agent 47 in the Hitman game series, auditioned for the role of Hitman but was rejected. Fans of the series started a petition in support of the actor, but the role of the killer went to Timothy Olyphant. Bateson negatively assessed Olyphant’s performance, noting that Olyphant, shaved bald, looked too young, and not all of the film’s scenes were successful.
- The scene where Yuri Markov is tied to a bathtub with barbed wire by Agent 47 is a reference to the "Saw" film series, and the main character also pronounces the iconic phrase from "Saw": "Live or die. The choice is yours."
- When the wounded American is sitting in the ambulance, it is clearly visible that he is buttoning his shirt, but later, during a conversation with the Russian KGB agent, his shirt is completely unbuttoned again.
- When the Hitman is putting the rifle barrel into the case, it is visible that the bomb is already in the case, but in the same second (00:12:33) there is a scene change – he starts to move his hands away from the barrel, and the bomb disappears.
- In one of the shots, you can see the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg, however the shot is captioned as "Moscow."
- At the 13th minute of the film, you can see the Ivan Vazov National Theatre (Naroden Teatar „Ivan Vazov“), which is located in the capital of Bulgaria, although at the 9th minute it is stated that the action takes place in St. Petersburg.
- When Agent 47 throws a Kedr submachine gun at Boris on the 62nd minute, it can be noticed that a suitcase with explosives and shards of a broken champagne bucket are already lying on the table in front of Belikov, although Agent throws the suitcase only in the next frame.
- On the 66th minute of the film, when Nika and Agent 47 are driving in a car, it is stated that they are on the Russian-Turkish border. In reality, there is no land border between the Russian Federation and Turkey.
