Prozac Nation follows Elizabeth Wurtzel, a young writer from a working-class background who wins a scholarship to Harvard and hopes the move will let her focus on her writing. Instead, the pressures of her family history and her parents' divorce deepen a depression she has carried for years. She begins treatment and is prescribed the antidepressant Prozac, which at first seems to offer relief and even fuels her creativity, but she soon questions whether the drug is helping her or harming her. Set against a backdrop of parties, casual drug use and sexual encounters, her story is presented as one shared by a generation dealing with divorce, drugs and enormous expectations.
Directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg, the film was released in 2003 and was his second feature, following Insomnia in 1997. Christina Ricci plays Elizabeth, with Jason Biggs, Anne Heche, Michelle Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Jessica Lange among the credited cast of 43. The screenplay was written by Larry Gross and Frank Deasy, and the production had a budget of 9 million USD.
The film has a mixed reception: a critics' rating of 4.8/10 from 24 reviews sits below the 6.2/10 on IMDb from 20,000 votes and the 6.4/10 on TMDB from 344 votes.
