Mr. 3000

Stan Ross was a baseball star known as Mr. 3000 for the number of hits he collected before walking away from the game at the height of his fame. Years into his retirement as a businessman, he learns that three of those hits have been ruled invalid, dropping him below the mark that gave him his nickname and leaving him facing the prospect of being remembered as Mr. 2997. Determined to restore his record, the out-of-shape veteran announces a comeback with the team he started out with, and has to prove he can still compete against much younger players.

The film is a comedy directed by Charles Stone III, his third feature after Drumline and Paid in Full, working from a screenplay by Eric Champnella, Keith Mitchell and Howard Michael Gould. Bernie Mac plays Stan, with Angela Bassett as Maureen Simmons, Michael Rispoli as Boca, Brian J. White as Rex Pennebaker, Dondré Whitfield as Skillet and Paul Sorvino as Gus Panas, among a credited cast of 61. It was produced by Touchstone Pictures, Spyglass Entertainment, Dimension Films and The Kennedy/Marshall Company on a budget of 30 million dollars, and took about 22 million dollars worldwide.
