God of Gamblers

Ko Chun is a gambler of extraordinary ability, known for reading cards and anticipating dice with uncanny accuracy. Before a high-stakes match, he falls into a trap and strikes his head. He survives with his gambling skills intact but loses his memory and much of his adult mind, behaving like a young child. A small-time bettor, Michael, takes him in and soon notices that the stranger can still win at cards. Michael and his girlfriend Jane care for Ko while he tries to turn those talents to his own advantage, even as bigger underworld figures remain part of the picture.

Wong Jing directed and co-wrote the film with Albert Mak Kai-Kwong; Jimmy Heung Wah-Sing co-produced. It was Wong Jing's first film as director and was followed the same year by Casino Raiders. Chow Yun-fat plays Ko Chun, with Andy Lau as Michael, Joey Wong as Jane, Sharla Cheung as Janet, Charles Heung as Lung Ng, and Lung Fong as Ko Yee, among a credited cast of forty-eight. The Hong Kong and Macau production mixes action, comedy and drama and runs 126 minutes.

Released in December 1989, the film took about 5 million USD worldwide at the box office. On TMDB it holds a 7.2 rating from 199 votes, indicating a widely seen genre title that audiences still regard with some affection.
