Johnny Case is a self-made financier with little interest in accumulating more money than he needs. He has fallen for Julia Seton, whose wealthy father expects the marriage to fold Johnny into the family banking business. Julia shares that expectation, and the plans she and her father make for his future clash with Johnny's wish to take time off and enjoy life while he is young. Her sister Linda, who has grown restless within the conventions of the Seton household, is the one person who grasps why he resists. When the engagement comes under strain, Johnny must decide whether to accept the life the Setons have laid out for him or follow his own inclinations.

George Cukor directed this adaptation of a Broadway play from a screenplay by Donald Ogden Stewart and Sidney Buchman, with Everett Riskin producing for Columbia Pictures. It was the fourth of the seventeen features Cukor directed, following Romeo and Juliet and preceding The Women. Katharine Hepburn plays Linda, Cary Grant plays Johnny, and Doris Nolan plays Julia, with Lew Ayres, Edward Everett Horton and Henry Kolker among the credited cast of twenty-nine.

The film drew strong notices from critics, whose rating on Rotten Tomatoes stands well above the audience scores of 7.7 on IMDb and 7.3 on TMDB. That gap suggests the performances and Cukor's direction were appreciated more by reviewers than the film's reputation among general viewers might indicate.
