Black Zombie

Black Zombie is a documentary that explores the historical roots of the zombie. It examines how the image evolved from the sugar plantations of colonial Haiti into the horror movies produced in Hollywood. The film presents the zombie not as a monster, but as a representation of spiritual defiance and the will to survive.

The film was written and directed by Maya Annik Bedward, who also served as a producer alongside Kate Fraser and Hannah Donegan. A co-production between Canada and the United States, the project received support from production companies including Raven Banner Entertainment, Hot Docs Partners, Ontario Creates, and Téléfilm Canada. The cast consists of individuals appearing as themselves, including Tom Savini, Slash, Mambo Labelle Déese Botanica, Erol Josué, Anderson Mojica, and Yves-Grégory Francois. This 90-minute production blends elements of horror and thriller within its documentary framework and was released on March 13, 2026.
