Auntie Mame

Mame Dennis lives a lavish, unconventional life in New York, surrounding herself with artists, writers and assorted eccentrics. When her wealthy brother dies, she becomes the guardian of his young son, Patrick, and sets about raising him with the same free-spirited enthusiasm she brings to everything else. The executor of the boy's late father, however, disapproves of Mame's ways and pushes to have Patrick sent away to a strict boarding school. His efforts and the family's changing fortunes, including the stock market crash, repeatedly disrupt their household.

The film is directed by Morton DaCosta, who also produced it, from a screenplay by Adolph Green and Betty Comden. It is the first of the two features he directed, followed by The Music Man in 1962. Rosalind Russell leads the cast as Mame, with Forrest Tucker, Coral Browne, Peggy Cass, Jan Handzlik and Roger Smith among the credited players; ninety-five performers appear in all. Based on the novel and the Broadway play, the production was released by Warner Bros. Pictures and runs 143 minutes.

The film opened in December 1958. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.9 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from a much smaller 129 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 16 reviews places it close to the audience score on IMDb, suggesting consistent appreciation across both groups.
