Good Morning is a Japanese comedy set in a Tokyo suburb, where two young brothers, Minoru and Isamu, are desperate to watch sumo on television. Their father refuses to buy a set, so the boys go to a neighbour's house to watch instead. When their parents tell them to stop making a fuss, the brothers take the instruction literally and stop speaking altogether. Their silence spreads confusion through the neighbourhood, unsettling the adults around them and exposing the small frictions of their daily lives.
Yasujirō Ozu directed the film, his thirteenth of sixteen, arriving between Equinox Flower and Floating Weeds. He wrote the screenplay with his frequent collaborator Kōgo Noda, and Shizuo Yamanouchi produced it for Shochiku. The cast includes Chishū Ryū and Kuniko Miyake as the boys' parents, Keiji Sada and Yoshiko Kuga as a young couple, and Haruko Sugimura as a neighbour. Kōji Shitara plays Minoru. Twenty-seven performers are credited.
Released in 1959, the film runs 94 minutes. It holds a critics' rating of 8.8 out of 10 from 16 reviews, higher than its audience scores: 7.8 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and 7.7 on TMDB from a few hundred.
