Short description

Captain Gennadiy Nevelskoy, an excellent student at the Naval Academy, is forced by his talent to teach naval science to the Tsarevich instead of conquering distant seas, watching as other people's dreams replace his own. Fourteen-year-old Nadezhda, a young student at the Institute for Noble Maidens, has never found her place in the capital. Deep down, she knows her true home is lost somewhere in the lands of the Far East, and she must return there. Upon meeting each other, Gennadiy and Nadezhda embark on a great and dangerous adventure-a search for themselves and their place in the world.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The project began when the founders of the Mechtalyot studio visited an exhibition by the Far Eastern creative group Nero4Hero titled 'Nevelskoy: Fruits of Imagination,' which was dedicated to a manga about Nevelskoy and his expeditions.
  • Studio employees who practiced fencing helped with the drawing of the battle between Nevelskoy and Borg. The animatic was created based on a video reference of a 'fight' using soft training swords.
  • The film showcases a variety of ferns: shield fern, maidenhair, and ostrich fern. Lady's slippers, three-lobed almond, Manchurian apricot, and Far Eastern cherry blossoms also appear in the frames. However, the creators decided to slightly embellish nature, as these plants do not bloom simultaneously.
  • When developing the visual style, the creators initially relied on anime classics and attempted to create a soft image consistent with historical cinema. However, the visual style gradually became more modern and angular, with 2000s Cartoon Network shows becoming one of the primary sources of inspiration.
  • Initially, the plot featured a naval cadet named Petrushka as Nevelskoy's companion instead of Nadya. In the next draft, a girl named Masha appeared, who dreamed of returning to the Far East. Finally, in the last version, Nadya was born—a girl who was younger and more determined, but driven by the same goal.
  • In one of the scenes, the characters speak the Ulch language, of which few native speakers remain. To voice these characters, the filmmakers found a representative of the Ulch people who is fluent in the language.
