Somersault

Heidi, a sixteen-year-old Australian, is caught kissing her mother's boyfriend and leaves home after the argument that follows. With nowhere to go, she drifts to Jindabyne, a ski town south of Canberra, where she scrapes by on casual work and temporary places to stay. At a bar she meets Joe, the son of a wealthy farmer, and begins a relationship with him. Settling down proves difficult: Heidi finds a job and a room with motel owner Irene, but her connection with Joe runs into trouble as the two of them want different things from it.

Somersault is the first film directed by Cate Shortland, who also wrote the screenplay, and it sits ahead of Lore, Berlin Syndrome and Black Widow in her filmography. Abbie Cornish plays Heidi and Sam Worthington plays Joe, with Lynette Curran, Erik Thomson, Nathaniel Dean and Diana Glenn among the credited cast of twenty-one; the crew numbered fifty-five. Produced in part through Australian and Dutch companies, the film is a drama with a romance at its centre, running 105 minutes.
