State of Grace

Terry Noonan comes back to Hell's Kitchen in New York after being away for ten years. He quickly falls in with Jackie, a friend from childhood who now belongs to the Irish mob, and picks up a romance with Jackie's sister Kathleen that had been left unfinished. The return puts Terry between the neighborhood he grew up in and the people who run it.

State of Grace was directed by Phil Joanou, the second of the seven features listed for him, arriving between Three O'Clock High and Final Analysis. Dennis McIntyre wrote the screenplay, and Randy Ostrow, Ned Dowd and Ron Rotholz produced. Sean Penn plays Terry, with Ed Harris as Frankie, Gary Oldman as Jackie, Robin Wright as Kathleen, John Turturro as Nick and Burgess Meredith as Finn. Forty cast members and seventy crew are credited.

The film opened in September 1990 and runs 135 minutes. Made for about 18 million dollars, it took in roughly 2 million at the worldwide box office, a poor return on its cost. Audiences rate it well: on IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from around 29,000 votes, and on TMDB 7/10 from 436 votes. A film critics' rating of 7/10 from 28 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
