In My Country follows Langston Whitfield, an African American journalist sent by the Washington Post to South Africa in the mid-1990s to report on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the body set up to examine crimes committed under apartheid by bringing perpetrators face to face with their victims. Covering the same hearings for radio is Anna Malan, a white Afrikaans writer and poet. The two are drawn to each other even as the testimony around them forces them to confront the racial and political divide between them.
The film is a drama with a romantic thread, directed by John Boorman and written by Ann Peacock. It was released in 2004, arriving between The Tailor of Panama and Queen & Country in Boorman's filmography, which stretches back to Point Blank in 1967. Samuel L. Jackson plays Whitfield and Juliette Binoche plays Malan, with Brendan Gleeson, Langley Kirkwood, Harriet Lenabe and Warona Seane among the credited cast of forty. It was produced by Phoenix Pictures, Chartoff Productions and Merlin Films as a co-production between the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and South Africa.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 3,100 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6 out of 10, from a much smaller base of 56 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 81 reviews places it below both audience figures. Against a budget of 12 million dollars, its worldwide box office came to about 1 million dollars.
