Short description

Set in Manhattan in the early 1980s, the film follows Alice and Charlotte, two recent college graduates who share a cramped apartment and low-paying jobs in publishing. Their lives revolve around an exclusive nightclub where the city's young crowd gathers, and gaining entry to it draws them into a circle of affluent friends. The friendship between the two women is complicated by their different temperaments and by their shared hopes for love, work and belonging.

Whit Stillman wrote, directed and produced the film, his second as director and his follow-up to Metropolitan (1990). Chloë Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale play the two leads, with Chris Eigeman, Mackenzie Astin, Matt Keeslar and Robert Sean Leonard among the supporting cast. The production had a modest budget of eight million dollars and returned roughly three million worldwide, a small fraction of its cost.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from about 15,000 votes, closely matching the critics' rating of 6.7 from 61 reviews, while on TMDB its rating is 6.3 from 222 votes. The pattern is unusual: the audience score on IMDb sits level with the critics, and viewers rate the film somewhat more generously than the smaller TMDB sample.
