Nina Borowski, a social worker in New York, takes in George Hanson, an elementary school teacher who has just been left by his boyfriend. The two become close housemates, and Nina, who is pregnant by her boyfriend Vince, comes to feel more for George than friendship. She asks him to help raise the child with her, an arrangement that unsettles Vince and forces all three to work out what family should look like. The film is a romantic comedy-drama about affection that does not fit the usual shape.
Nicholas Hytner directed, following The Madness of King George and The Crucible, with a screenplay by Wendy Wasserstein and Laurence Mark producing. Jennifer Aniston plays Nina and Paul Rudd plays George, supported by Alan Alda, Nigel Hawthorne, John Pankow and Tim Daly among a credited cast of 59 and crew of 87. Made for about 15 million dollars, it took in roughly 47 million worldwide, a solid return.
On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 23,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 out of 10 from 342 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 57 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a modest, mildly received film rather than a sharply divisive one.
