Three friends who tend a marijuana crop on a Northern California plantation find their easy arrangement undone when their employer, Malcolm, dies. Convinced they know enough to survive on their own, they take what they consider their share of the harvest and leave, hoping to sell it themselves. In the next town they make contact with Lucy, a go-between who can put them in touch with buyers, and they begin working out how to move the crop. The plan draws the attention of people far more experienced in the trade than they are, and the three find themselves out of their depth in a business where the stakes are considerably higher than they imagined.
Stephen Gyllenhaal directed Homegrown, his sixth feature, following Waterland, A Dangerous Woman and Losing Isaiah, and he wrote the screenplay with Nicholas Kazan. Billy Bob Thornton, Hank Azaria and Ryan Phillippe play the three growers, with Kelly Lynch as Lucy and supporting turns from Ted Danson and Jon Bon Jovi among a credited cast of thirty-five. The film runs 102 minutes and was released on April 17, 1998. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from about 5,300 votes, and on TMDB 5.5 from 66 votes; a critics' rating of 5.9 from 18 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
