Short description
A disillusioned young writer living in New York City turns to drugs and drinking to block out the memories of his dead mother and estranged wife.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to David Hyde Pierce, he paid more to join the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) than he earned as a fee for this movie. He had no choice but to join the Guild, as he otherwise would not have been cast. Being short on funds, Pierce borrowed the money for the entrance fee from his agent. He played a bartender, and his only line on screen was, "Sorry, we're closed."
- According to screenwriter Jay McInerney, producer Sydney Pollack reportedly demanded that all mentions of drugs be removed from the script, as he feared such associations would damage the pristine image of Michael J. Fox, who played Jamie.
- Tom Cruise turned down the offer to play Jamie because he didn't like the scenes where his character uses drugs.
