Short description
Captain Corelli's Mandolin is set on the Greek island of Cephalonia during the Second World War. Pelagia, the daughter of the village doctor, is engaged to Mandras, a fisherman who goes off to fight. When Italian forces occupy the island, Captain Antonio Corelli is billeted in her father's house, and the two gradually develop feelings for each other. Their growing attachment is set against Pelagia's loyalty to her absent fiancé and her community, the pressure of the occupation, and the wider conflict closing in on the island.
The film was directed by John Madden, the sixth of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, arriving after Shakespeare in Love and before Proof. Shawn Slovo wrote the screenplay, and Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Mark Huffam produced. Nicolas Cage plays Corelli opposite Penélope Cruz as Pelagia, with John Hurt as Dr. Iannis, Christian Bale as Mandras, David Morrissey as Captain Günther Weber and Irene Papas as Drosoula. The credited cast runs to 79 names.
Made for about 57 million US dollars, the film took roughly 62 million dollars worldwide, a modest return against its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 37,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.9 out of 10 from some 588 votes. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 118 reviews places it slightly below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Louis de Bernières, the author of the novel that served as the literary basis for the film, rewrote the book around 35 times to convey to the reader, as accurately as possible, the stories he was told by locals.
- The film is based on the novel of the same name by English writer Louis de Bernières, about the events of 1943, known as the Aquila Division Massacre.
- Initially, Roger Michell (1956-2021) was appointed director of the film, but he had a seizure and John Madden became the director.
