Where the Sidewalk Ends

Where the Sidewalk Ends centres on Mark Dixon, a New York police detective whose brutal methods have drawn criticism from his superiors and colleagues. During an investigation he becomes involved in a fight with a suspect, who dies, and Dixon chooses to hide what happened rather than admit to it. He tries to shift suspicion onto a gangster he despises, while a taxi driver is accused of the killing. Dixon also grows close to the taxi driver's daughter, Morgan Taylor, which complicates his efforts to keep his role concealed.

Otto Preminger directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Ben Hecht. It was the fourth of the sixteen films Preminger directed, following Forever Amber and preceding River of No Return. Dana Andrews plays Dixon and Gene Tierney plays Morgan Taylor, with Bert Freed, Gary Merrill, Karl Malden and Tom Tully among the credited cast of fifty-six. The production was made by 20th Century Fox and runs ninety-five minutes.

On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from sixteen reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 212 votes, indicating that critics rated it slightly more favourably than the wider audience did.
