Khumba is a young zebra born with stripes on only half his body, a difference that sets him apart from the rest of his herd. When a severe drought strikes the Karoo, many of the other zebras come to believe his odd appearance is to blame. Unwilling to accept his place as an outcast, Khumba sets out on his own to find the legendary waterhole where the first zebras are said to have gained their stripes, hoping to win back both water for his herd and his father's respect. Along the way he falls in with Mama V, a wildebeest who rejects the usual role of her kind, and Bradley, a flamboyant ostrich. Their journey brings them up against the tyrannical leopard Phango, who controls the region's water and terrorises its animals.
The film was directed by Anthony Silverston, who wrote the screenplay with Raffaella Delle Donne, and produced by Vanessa Ann Sinden, Mike Buckland and Jean-Michel Koenig. It was made by the South African studio Triggerfish. Among the voice cast, Jake T. Austin plays Khumba, Liam Neeson voices Phango, Steve Buscemi appears as Skalk, AnnaSophia Robb as Tombi, Laurence Fishburne as Seko and Richard E. Grant as Bradley, with 37 performers credited in all.
Released in 2013, the film runs 85 minutes and cost about 20 million US dollars to make, going on to earn roughly 27 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 6,900 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from 278 votes, while a critics' score of 4.8 out of 10 from 18 reviews places it below those audience figures.
