Short description

Zootopia is an animated adventure set in a modern metropolis built for mammals of every size, from enormous elephants to the smallest shrew, with districts shaped to suit each species' needs. Judy Hopps arrives from the countryside as the first rabbit on the city police force, determined to prove herself among larger, stronger colleagues. Written off by her superiors and assigned to minor duties, she seizes the chance to investigate a case of missing animals. To make progress she must work with Nick Wilde, a fox and small-time con artist, and the pair uncover a conspiracy that reaches further than either expected.

The film was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore for Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, from a screenplay by Phil Johnston and Jared Bush, with Clark Spencer producing. It followed Howard's Bolt and Tangled and Moore's Wreck-It Ralph, and preceded Howard's Encanto and Zootopia 2, and Moore's Ralph Breaks the Internet. Ginnifer Goodwin voices Judy, Jason Bateman voices Nick, and Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence and Bonnie Hunt are among the voice cast.

Released in February 2016, the film runs 109 minutes. Against a budget of about 150 million USD it took roughly 1.02 billion USD worldwide, placing it among the highest-grossing animated releases of its time. It holds an 8/10 rating on IMDb from around 628,000 votes and 7.8/10 on TMDB from about 18,500 votes; critics rated it 8.1/10 across 298 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The character of Nick Wilde is based on Disney's Robin Hood from the animated film of the same name, who was also a fox.
  • This is already the fourth consecutive animated film produced by "Walt Disney Animation Studios" for actor Alan Tudyk, following "Wreck-It Ralph" (2012), "Frozen" (2013), and "Big Hero 6" (2014).
  • This is the third Disney animated film featuring anthropomorphic animals and containing neither humans nor non-anthropomorphic animals. The first two were "Robin Hood" (1973) and "Chicken Little" (2005).
  • Duke Weaselton is voiced by Alan Tudyk, who also voiced the Duke of Weselton in the animated film "Frozen" (2013). "Duke" is "duke" in English.
  • The first of two animated films released in 2016 to feature Idris Elba. The second is "Finding Dory".
  • "Zootopia" is Disney's 55th full-length animated feature film.
  • Police station secretary Clawhauser may not possess the grace of a true cheetah, but there is one detail in his appearance that clearly identifies his species – black stripes running from the inner corners of his eyes to the outer corners of his mouth.
  • In an attempt to showcase the habits of herbivores, the artists “decorated” the outerwear of some animals – such as sheep, antelopes, and yaks – with blades of grass, leaves, and twigs.
  • One of the film’s operators, Nathan Warner, became well-acquainted with a real cheetah during a research expedition to Africa. One of the rescued animals, presented to the filmmakers by local gamekeepers, apparently took a dislike to Warner’s camera. The cheetah, seemingly, decided to explain its displeasure to the operator and jumped on his back. Neither Warner nor the cheetah were harmed in the incident.
  • The artists understood that rabbits, like hares, have a split upper lip. However, when working on Judy's appearance, the filmmakers decided to forgo this detail.
  • The first footage of 'Zootopia' was presented at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2015.
  • This is the third film in which actors Jason Bateman and J.K. Simmons have appeared together: the first was "Juno," and the second was "Up in the Air."
  • "Zootopia" is the first Walt Disney Animation Studios cartoon for which Michael Giacchino composed the music.
  • Although Zootopia itself is a city of mammals, it is implied that there are cities in this world for other animals as well, such as birds or reptiles.
  • The character Mr. Big is a parody of the main characters from "The Godfather" and "Scarface."
  • There is a spot on Clawhauser's right cheek in the shape of Mickey Mouse's head.
  • Peter Losini is a parody of Canadian television presenter Peter Mansbridge. His appearance varies in regional versions of the cartoon. In the American and Canadian versions, Losini remains a moose. In the Chinese version, he is a panda, in the Brazilian version – a jaguar, in the Japanese version – a tanuki, and in the Australian and New Zealand versions – a koala.
  • Several Disney animated films parodied in the animal films: Wrangled — Tangled Wreck-It Rhino — Wreck-It Ralph Pig Hero 6 — Big Hero 6 Meowana — Moana Giraffic — Gigantic Floatzen 2 — Frozen 2
  • In Zootopia, predators eat fish, plants, and protein extracted from insects.
  • Judy Hopps is 24 years old, and Nick Wilde is 32.
  • The idea to create Zootopia came to the authors 5 years before the film's release – in 2011.
  • Initially, the fox Nick Wilde was given the name Jack, however, during development, his name was changed to Nick, in honor of Nicholas Orsi, an artist from the visual development department who was part of the very first and smallest team creating the story and image of Zootopia. He was such an integral part of the team that the directors honored him by renaming the main character, the fox, from Jack to Nick.
  • During the development of the cartoon, at least two versions existed: one told the story of a rabbit agent, Jack Savage, and was a reference to the famous 007 franchise. This version was called Savage Seas or Savage City. The second version was a dystopia in which all predators wore electric collars and were an oppressed species. The main protagonist of this version was the fox Nicholas Wilde, who was trying to raise money for his own amusement park, Wilde Times, where predators could take off their collars and feel like free animals. This plot option had a familiar name – Zootopia.
  • During the creation of Zootopia, the authors were primarily inspired by nature, as well as cities such as Shanghai, Barcelona, and New York.
  • In the scene in Douglas's laboratory, a map of the city with photos of missing animals hangs on the wall. The lower right photo of a wolf in a red t-shirt on a bench is a reference to the internet meme “Sad Keanu”.
  • In the cartoon, you can see DVD discs with Disney animated films, the covers of which have been redesigned to fit the Zootopia format.
  • Judy's music player has several parodied Disney songs, including "Let It Go" from "Frozen", "Part of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid", "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from "The Lion King", and "Arabian Nights" from "Aladdin".
  • Douglas the ram, one of the antagonists, appears in three episodes of the cartoon in three different guises: a truck driver at the very beginning of the film, a news reporter during Judy's interview, and a chemist in a subway train car.
  • The time on Judy's electronic alarm clock in her room and on her phone during her conversation with her parents differs. Before the call with her parents, the time is the same on both clocks, but after the call, the time on the mobile phone changes to 9:44.
  • When Judy calculates how much Nick earned over 20 years, she makes notes on the first sheet of her folder and flips it over (from right to left). In the next frame, as she moves on to Nick's tax return, we do not see the flipped sheet that was there two seconds earlier. The left side of the folder is completely empty.
  • The character of Judy Hopps, voiced by Jennifer Goodwin, is named after the character Judy Hoffes played by Holly Robinson Peete in the series "21 Jump Street" (1987).
  • The artists who worked on the appearance of Zootopia's assistant mayor, a sheep named Mrs. Bellwether, drew inspiration from characters in the classic Disney films "Play Me Backwards" and "Melody Time."
  • When creating the image of the city's mayor, Leo Theodore Zlatogriv, the artists were guided by the appearance of Mufasa from the classic Disney film "The Lion King".
  • The latest technologies allowed filmmakers to adjust the length of the fur under the costumes so that the clothes "fit" the characters. Previously, individual hairs at the junction with wardrobe items would have to be drawn by hand, one by one, as was the case, for example, with the collar of the dog Volt in the animated film "Bolt." Given the numerous population of Zootopia, such a technology would have made filming the film incredibly laborious.
  • Director Byron Howard wanted to create "Zootopia" as a tribute to "Robin Hood" and modern CGI technology.
  • Producer Clark Spencer was inspired to create "Zootopia" by the cartoon "The Jungle Book."
  • "Zootopia" features several parodies of real-life companies: Lululemmings — Lululemon Just Zoo It — Just Do It, the famous Nike slogan Preyda — Prada Bearberry — Burberry Snarlbucks — Starbucks Zoogle — Google ZNN — CNN Mousey’s — Macy’s Lucky Chomps — Lucky Charms MuzzleTime — FaceTime Trader Doe’s — Trader Joe's Cub Soda — Club Soda Catsio — Casio Zuber — Uber Lemming brothers — Lehman Brothers Some smartphones have a logo similar to the Apple logo, with a carrot instead of an apple. There are also devices that resemble iPads, but with a paw print logo and the name "iPaw."
  • According to the director, Judy Hopps was inspired by Leslie Knope from "Parks and Recreation" and the DC Comics character Superman. And Nick Wilde, in addition to Robin Hood, was modeled after Hollywood actor Cary Grant.
  • The name of the black jaguar, Manchas, means "spots" in Spanish.
  • Nicholas Wilde's middle name is Tiberius, a reference to James Tiberius Kirk from "Star Trek".
  • Nick Wilde is one of the few characters who appeared on screen before the film's premiere. He appears on Honey Lemon's phone case from "Big Hero 6." Also, a "Zootopia" poster can be seen during the scene of Baymax and Hiro's flight.
  • In Tundratown, you can spot two small elephants dressed as Elsa and Anna from "Frozen".
  • In the world of Mouse there is a building called Lucky Cat Café – a reference to 'Zootopia'.
