Short description

Jane Hammond has built a quiet life on a remote farm with her husband, Bill, a man with a violent criminal past. That past catches up with him when he turns against the outlaw gang he once rode with and arrives home riddled with bullets, barely alive. Knowing the gang will come to finish the job, Jane sends for Dan Frost, a gunman she has not seen in more than a decade and the last person she ever wanted to ask for help. Dan has his own history with Bill, and his feelings for Jane have not faded. Together they prepare to defend the farm against the men hunting her husband.

Gavin O'Connor directed the film, which sits between Warrior and The Accountant in his filmography. Natalie Portman stars as Jane and also produced; Joel Edgerton plays Dan and co-wrote the screenplay with Anthony Tambakis and Brian Duffield. Ewan McGregor, Noah Emmerich, Boyd Holbrook and Rodrigo Santoro round out the cast.

Made for about 25 million dollars, the film returned roughly 4 million worldwide, a wide gap between its cost and its theatrical earnings. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 25,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 from roughly 900. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 85 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Michael Fassbender was initially cast as Dan Frost, but he left the project due to a conflict with director Lynne Ramsay. Filming was scheduled to begin on a specific day, but Ramsay did not show up. Less than 24 hours later, Gavin O'Connor was appointed director, and work on the film proceeded according to schedule.
  • The role of Jane was at one point intended for actress Karen Gillan.
  • Bradley Cooper was initially cast as the main antagonist, but had to decline due to a busy filming schedule on other projects. Toby Maguire, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Tom Hiddleston were considered as replacements. Jake Gyllenhaal immediately rejected the offer to play the role.
  • The replacement of Lynne Ramsay with another director led to Jude Law leaving the cast, stating that he had agreed to participate in the project only because of the opportunity to work with Ramsay. The role Law was cast in was to be played by Bradley Cooper.
  • Renowned cinematographer Darius Khondji left the project in solidarity with Lynne Ramsay.
  • Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, and Jeff Bridges were considered for the role of John Bishop.
  • The original screenplay for Brian Duffield's film made it onto the "Black List of the best unproduced screenplays of 2011".
  • Filming took place in early 2013, but the premiere was scheduled for February 2016, almost three years after filming wrapped. During this time, actor Joel Edgerton wrote the screenplay, directed, produced, and released the film "The Gift" (2015).
  • This is the first collaboration between Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor outside of the "Star Wars" cinematic universe, and their fourth time appearing together on set. It's the first film they've starred in together in almost 10 years. Natalie and Ewan previously co-starred in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy as Padmé Amidala and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
  • Lynn Ramsay left the project "Jane Got a Gun" (2016) just before filming began, following a three-day standoff with producer and financier Scott Steindorff in March 2013. Ramsay complained about the producer's inappropriate behavior, who at the last minute tried to impose an impossible shooting schedule on her and simultaneously planned to remove her from the final film edit. Ramsay stated that she had been promised something completely different and left the project. She had been promised a salary of $750,000 plus bonuses (she had never received that much money before), but Ramsay left due to the impossibility of making the film as she envisioned it, rather than as the producers wanted. In November 2013, Steindorff filed a lawsuit against Ramsay for breach of contract, but the case was settled out of court in March 2014. Producers stated they would no longer seek $850,000 (or £512,000) in damages and the advance payment from the celebrated director.
  • Michael Fassbender was originally slated to play Dan Frost, and Joel Edgerton was considered for the role of John Bishop. Due to delays in the start of filming, Fassbender had to withdraw from the project as he was already committed to filming "X-Men: Days of Future Past." Edgerton took on the role of Dan Frost, and Jude Law agreed to play Bishop, but later left the project.
  • The film "Jane Got a Gun" is considered a very loose adaptation of the story told in "Hannibal Brooks" (1971). Here, the protagonist, whose husband has been kidnapped by bandits, seeks help from a former lover. In "Hannibal Brooks," a woman whose husband was killed by bandits and who was herself raped, turns to a lone gunman asking him to teach her how to use a weapon.
  • Natalie Portman played the role of Jane Hammond. In the film "V for Vendetta" (2005), her character is named Evey Hammond, in the films "Thor" (2011) and "Thor: The Dark World" (2013) she plays a character named Jane Foster, and in the film "Closer" (2004), her character calls herself Jane Jones.
  • After several postponements, the Parisian premiere of the film at the UGC Normandie multiplex and cinema was scheduled for November 16, 2015, and the film was to be released nationwide in France on November 25. Due to the terrorist attacks in the French capital on November 13, both the premiere and a series of interviews related to the film's release were cancelled. The release of "Jane Takes a Gun" was postponed to early 2016.
  • The third film to feature Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, and Joel Edgerton together. The first two were Episodes II and III of "Star Wars".
  • The second film to star Natalie Portman and Noah Emmerich together. Almost 20 years ago, when Portman was still a teenager and Emmerich was in his 30s, they appeared in "Beautiful Girls" (1996). This time they played a married couple.
