Rooster Cogburn
Short description
In this 1975 Western, a band of outlaws robs a shipment of nitroglycerin and kills a preacher named Goodnight during a raid on a settlement where he worked with a Native American community. Federal Judge Parker, who considers Marshal Rooster Cogburn too quick with a gun, gives him one more assignment: track down the gang. The preacher's daughter, Eula, insists on coming along, and the hard-drinking lawman and the devout missionary clash as they pursue the killers together. John Wayne plays Cogburn, a role he had originated in True Grit, with Katharine Hepburn as Eula. Anthony Zerbe, Richard Jordan, John McIntire and Paul Koslo appear in supporting parts.
Stuart Millar directed and Martha Hyer wrote the screenplay, with Hal B. Wallis producing for Universal Pictures. The film was released in November 1975 and runs 108 minutes. Made for about 10 million dollars, it took in roughly 18 million worldwide. Its reception was modest: on IMDb it holds 6.8 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from about 231 votes. A critics' score of 4.8 from 12 reviews sits below those audience figures, indicating that reviewers were less taken with the film than viewers were.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, John Wayne wanted Ingrid Bergman to be his co-star. He then stated that the heroine should be younger and suggested Mary Tyler Moore for the role, deciding that audiences would likely not appreciate a film with two older characters in the lead roles.
- Initially, plans were made to create a third film about Rooster Cogburn, titled "Once Upon a Time." These plans were abandoned because the film did not fully meet expectations, and Paramount Pictures also cited John Wayne's age and a general decline in public interest in the Western genre as reasons for the cancellation.
- While teaching his eight-year-old daughter to play golf during the filming of this movie, John Wayne suffered an injury, but fortunately, it was concealed with an eye patch. Wayne had been living with only one lung for ten years prior to filming, so breathing at that altitude was difficult for him, and he often required an oxygen mask.
