Short description

Hey Arnold! The Movie continues the story of Arnold, the nine-year-old boy with the football-shaped head who lives with his grandparents in a boarding house. A powerful real estate developer, Scheck, has won the mayor's approval for a plan to tear down the entire neighborhood and replace it with a large shopping complex, which would destroy the boarding house, the local shops and everything Arnold considers home. With time running short, Arnold sets out to stop the demolition, helped by his best friend Gerald and by Helga, the classmate who torments him in public while secretly harboring feelings for him. Their efforts center on recovering a document that could halt the project.

The film was directed by Tuck Tucker from a screenplay by Craig Bartlett and Steve Viksten, with Bartlett also producing alongside Albie Hecht. It was made by Paramount, Nickelodeon Movies, Nickelodeon Animation Studio and Snee-Oosh Productions. Spencer Klein voices Arnold, Francesca Marie Smith plays Helga, Jamil Walker Smith plays Gerald, and Dan Castellaneta and Tress MacNeille voice his grandparents. Paul Sorvino voices Scheck, and twenty-four performers appear in the credited cast.

Released in June 2002 and running seventy-six minutes, the film was produced on a budget of three million dollars and took about fifteen million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from roughly 8,300 votes, and on TMDB it has 6.5 out of 10 from 383 votes. The critics' rating stands at 4.6 out of 10 from seventy-six reviews, below the scores given by audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • No music was written for the cartoon.
  • Initially, it was planned to create a second animated film, which was supposed to be the final episode, following the "Diary" episode, at the end of which Arnold finds a map and decides to go to the jungle to find his parents. It is known that the script for the second full-length animated film was written long ago by Craig Bartlett, and he himself spoke about this a lot in interviews and chats with fans. Initially, "Nickelodeon" liked the idea of a sequel, but after the first part's failure, the situation changed dramatically: the project was frozen and postponed indefinitely. Craig Bartlett was offered to work at "Nickelodeon" on a conditional basis, and after some time, he left the channel. The main problem, however, is that the rights to the animated series and all its sequels remain with "Nickelodeon."
  • The cartoon was initially planned for television broadcast, but ultimately was released in theaters.
