City of Hope is a 1991 American drama set in a struggling New Jersey city, where an old apartment building stands in the way of a large commercial development. At the centre of the story is Nick Rinaldi, a disillusioned building contractor who has spent his life supported by his wealthy father, Joe. Nick becomes caught up in a political struggle involving a corrupt mayor and the police, while the film follows a wider group of residents. Among them are Asteroid, a homeless and unstable man, and Winn, an idealistic young politician. The film presents urban conflict and corruption through the intersecting lives of these characters.
John Sayles directed and wrote the screenplay, with Sarah Green and Maggie Renzi producing. It was released in October 1991 and runs 129 minutes. The large credited cast of 55 includes Vincent Spano as Nick, Tony Lo Bianco as Joe, Joe Morton as Winn, Jace Alexander, Todd Graff and Frankie Faison. It followed Sayles's The Brother from Another Planet, Matewan and Eight Men Out, and came before Lone Star and later films.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.3 from around 2,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 19 reviews is close to the audience score, suggesting broad agreement about its merits, though the IMDb figure rests on far more viewers.
