Canadian Bacon

Canadian Bacon is a comedy about a United States president whose approval ratings are falling and who needs a foreign threat to distract the public. With the Cold War over, his advisers settle on Canada as the new enemy, and a media campaign against the northern neighbour follows. In Niagara Falls, a weapons plant closes and thousands lose their jobs, while a sheriff named Bud Boomer and his deputy Honey take the invented threat seriously enough to act on it, setting off an international incident.

The film was directed by Michael Moore, who also wrote the screenplay. It came after his 1989 documentary Roger & Me and was his second directed feature; his later films include Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, Sicko, Capitalism: A Love Story and Fahrenheit 11/9. John Candy plays Sheriff Bud B. Boomer, with Alan Alda as the president, Rhea Perlman as Deputy Honey, Kevin Pollak as National Security Advisor Stuart Smiley, Rip Torn as General Dick Panzer and Kevin J. O'Connor as Roy Boy. The credited cast runs to 46 names.

Canadian Bacon was released in June 1995 and runs 91 minutes. It was made for about 11 million US dollars. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 19,000 votes; on TMDB it has 5.7 out of 10 from 268 votes. A critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 21 reviews places it below both audience scores.
