Like Father, Like Son

Ryota Nonomiya is a wealthy Tokyo architect whose life is organised around ambition and the standards he sets for others. He and his wife Midori are raising a six-year-old son, Keita, when the hospital where the boy was born contacts them with news that two infants were switched there. The child they have raised is not their biological son, and their own son is growing up with a family of far more modest means. Faced with pressure from those around him and his own conflicted feelings, Ryota must weigh what parenthood means: the bond formed over six years of care, or the biological tie he has never known. The two families, whose circumstances and outlooks differ sharply, approach the situation in their own ways.

Hirokazu Kore-eda wrote and directed the film, the sixth of the sixteen features he has directed to date, following Air Doll and preceding Our Little Sister. Masaharu Fukuyama plays Ryota, with Machiko Ono as Midori; Yoko Maki and Lily Franky appear as the couple raising the Nonomiyas' biological son, alongside Jun Fubuki and Jun Kunimura. The production drew on a Japanese cast and crew of roughly twenty credited performers and eighty-eight credited crew members.

Released in September 2013, the drama earned about 20 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.6/10 from 102 reviews, while on TMDB it scores 7.7/10 from 826 votes, indicating that critics and general viewers responded to it in similar measure.
