To End All Wars

Set during the Second World War after the fall of Singapore, To End All Wars follows Allied soldiers taken prisoner by the Japanese and forced to build a railway through the Thai jungle under brutal conditions. Among them are Captain Ernest Gordon, Lieutenant Jim Reardon and Major Ian Campbell, who clash over how to endure captivity: Campbell favours revolt and escape, while Gordon advocates a more stoic response that gradually influences the men around him. The story draws on the real experiences of Ernest Gordon.

David L. Cunningham directed from a screenplay by Brian Godawa. It was the first of the director's features, followed by The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising, Running for Grace and Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas. Ciarán McMenamin plays Gordon, Robert Carlyle plays Campbell and Kiefer Sutherland plays Reardon, with Mark Strong, Yugo Saso and Sakae Kimura among a credited cast of 34. The production was a British, American and Thai co-production made for about 14 million dollars.

The film runs 108 minutes. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.4 from some 191 votes. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 13 reviews sits below the larger audience sample on IMDb.
