Short description
Two sailors on shore leave in Los Angeles plan to spend their free time partying. Their goals are disrupted when they encounter a young boy who wishes to join the navy. After helping the child, the men become entangled in the life of the boy's aunt, a woman pursuing a career as a singer. The plot follows the romantic complications and musical mishaps that arise as both sailors develop feelings for her.
Directed by George Sidney, this film followed his work on Thousands Cheer and Bathing Beauty. The cast features Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, José Iturbi, and Dean Stockwell, with a total of 88 credited performers. What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, it was planned for Gene Kelly (1912-1996) to dance with Mickey Mouse, but Walt Disney (1901-1966) did not allow his famous character to appear in a film from MGM studio, so Kelly decided to use Jerry Mouse from the “Tom and Jerry” franchise. At first, it didn't work because the animators forgot to draw Jerry's shadow. They had to create an additional 10,000 new drawings, which took 2 months and $100,000.
- It took Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) eight weeks to learn the dance on the pier. The scene was shot in 72 takes, although this is more attributable to Gene Kelly’s perfectionism than to Sinatra’s inability to dance. Sinatra later said that in those eight weeks he could have filmed an entire movie.
