It Happened on Fifth Avenue

Aloysius T. McKeever is a New Yorker who has made a habit of spending his winters in the grand Fifth Avenue mansions left empty by their wealthy owners. Settling into the home of millionaire Michael J. O'Connor, who has gone south for the season, he soon invites a homeless Second World War veteran, Jim Bullock, to share the place. Their household grows when a young woman named Trudy arrives, claiming to have run away from a domineering father, and the two men take her in without suspecting who she really is. Romance develops between Jim and Trudy while none of the guests know that the real owners are about to return.

Roy Del Ruth directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Everett Freeman. It sits between Ziegfeld Follies (1945) and On Moonlight Bay (1951) in a directing career that stretches back to the late 1920s. Victor Moore plays Aloysius, with Don DeFore as Jim, Gale Storm as Trudy, Charles Ruggles as Michael O'Connor, Ann Harding as Mary O'Connor and Grant Mitchell as Al Farrow among a credited cast of fifty-three.

Released in April 1947, the film runs just under two hours and blends comedy, romance and music. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from roughly 7,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from a much smaller sample of 87 votes. The two audiences agree on a generally favourable response, with the far larger IMDb group giving the steadier picture.
