Cluny Brown

Cluny Brown is a young woman with an unusual passion for plumbing, a trade she has picked up from her uncle, a London plumber. When she helps a customer on her own, her uncle decides she needs to be set straight and arranges for her to take a job as a maid at an English country estate owned by Sir Henry and Lady Carmel. There she meets Adam Belinski, a Czech writer who has fled the Nazis and is staying at the house as a guest of the family. The two recognize something of themselves in each other, though a local shopkeeper has his own plans to marry Cluny.

The film is a comedy directed by Ernst Lubitsch, who also produced it, from a screenplay by Samuel Hoffenstein and Elizabeth Reinhardt. It was released in 1946 and followed such Lubitsch films as Ninotchka, The Shop Around the Corner, To Be or Not to Be and Heaven Can Wait. Charles Boyer plays Belinski and Jennifer Jones plays Cluny, with Peter Lawford, Helen Walker, Reginald Gardiner and Reginald Owen in supporting roles.
