Mackenna's Gold

Mackenna's Gold is a Western adventure centered on a marshal who comes into possession of a map showing a legendary deposit of Apache gold hidden somewhere in the desert. He destroys it, convinced the story is only a legend, but a bandit named Colorado is certain the marshal has memorized the route. Colorado takes him prisoner and forces him to lead an expedition into Indian territory, where townspeople, outlaws and others with their own designs on the treasure join the hunt. As the group pushes toward the canyon, greed and rivalry turn the journey violent.

The film was directed by J. Lee Thompson, the eighth of the twenty-one features he directed in chronological order, following What a Way to Go! and preceding The Chairman. Carl Foreman wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Dimitri Tiomkin. Gregory Peck plays Marshal MacKenna and Omar Sharif plays Colorado, with Camilla Sparv, Julie Newmar, Telly Savalas and Keenan Wynn among the twenty-four credited cast members. It was made by Columbia Pictures and Highroad Productions on a budget of about seven million dollars and runs 128 minutes.

Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.7 from more than 9,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from a much smaller pool of 219 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 from five reviews places it below both audience scores.
