The Man from Laramie

Will Lockhart rides into Coronado, a small, remote town in New Mexico, delivering goods but also pursuing a private purpose: to find whoever has been selling rifles to the Apache. Those weapons were used against a cavalry patrol that included his brother, so the search is personal as well as a matter of justice. In Coronado he crosses paths with the Waggoman family, who dominate the local ranching economy, and the hostility of Alec Waggoman's son Dave turns a routine delivery into an open conflict that grows more dangerous as Lockhart closes in on the arms trader.

Anthony Mann directed, with Philip Yordan and Frank Burt writing the screenplay and William Goetz producing for Columbia Pictures. It was the thirteenth of the twenty features Mann directed in chronological order, following The Far Country and preceding Strategic Air Command, so its release falls in the middle of his run of Westerns with James Stewart. Stewart plays Lockhart, with Arthur Kennedy, Donald Crisp, Cathy O'Donnell, Alex Nicol and Aline MacMahon among the principal cast of twenty credited players.

The film runs 103 minutes and took about three million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3/10 from around 13,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2/10 from roughly 270. A critics' rating of 8/10 from twelve reviews places it slightly above the audience scores, while the vote counts show a far larger audience sample than critical one.
