Short description

Frozen Land follows a chain of events set off when a young man uses a counterfeit 500-euro note. The bill passes from hand to hand, and each person it reaches is already struggling: a teacher who has lost his job and turned to drink, a hacker with grand plans and a pregnant girlfriend hoping to marry, a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman, a car dealer, and a police officer and mother of three who is investigating the hacker. Their lives intersect as the consequences of the forged money spread outward.

Aku Louhimies directed the Finnish drama, working from a screenplay he wrote with Paavo Westerberg and Jari Rantala. It was his second feature, arriving between Restless and Man Exposed in a filmography that later includes Unknown Soldier and Attack on Finland. Markus Selin produced for Solar Films, and the cast of 89 credited performers is led by Jasper Pääkkönen, Mikko Leppilampi, Pamela Tola, Petteri Summanen, Matleena Kuusniemi and Mikko Kouki. The production had a budget of about one million dollars.

The film runs 133 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from roughly 6,800 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.8 from a much smaller group of 67 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • There were serious disagreements regarding the final version of this film. Director Aku Louhimies did not approve of the edit by Solar Films. On December 2, 2004, Louhimies sent a letter to the Helsinki Municipal Court requesting that Solar Films not distribute the version he had not approved, under threat of a 300,000 euro fine. The situation was resolved a few days later when it was decided to create another version of the film, satisfying both sides.
