Night of the Comet

Night of the Comet is set as a comet passes close to Earth and wipes out nearly everyone. Two teenage sisters, Regina and Samantha, emerge as survivors in a Los Angeles emptied of most of its population. The comet's tail has left behind red dust and turned many of those who remain into aggressive mutants, while a group of scientists pursues its own plans for dealing with the disaster. The sisters team up with Hector, a truck driver, and make their way through the devastated city, where the girls' taste for shopping sits alongside the constant threat from the mutated survivors.

Thom Eberhardt wrote and directed the film, the first in the list of his feature directing credits, ahead of The Night Before and Without a Clue later in the same decade. Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney play Regina and Samantha, with Robert Beltran as Hector and supporting turns from Sharon Farrell, Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis among a credited cast of 21. Wayne Crawford and Andrew Lane produced.

Released in November 1984, the film blends comedy, horror and science fiction and runs 95 minutes. It took about 14 million dollars worldwide, a solid return for its scale. On IMDb it holds 6.3 from more than 27,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from 462. A critics' rating of 6.5 from 34 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
