Arlis Sweeney leads a quiet, unsettled life in west Texas, moving from town to town to service vending machines. He keeps his distance from people, shaped by a childhood memory he cannot escape: traveling with his father, Roy, on robberies of isolated farmhouses, one of which ended in the killing of a family. That past resurfaces when Arlis meets Kay Davies, a woman drifting away from a broken marriage. The two grow close and begin to build something together, but Roy reappears with a woman named Ginnie, forcing Arlis to confront what he has spent decades avoiding.
Steve Kloves directed and wrote the film, his second feature after The Fabulous Baker Boys. Dennis Quaid plays Arlis, with Meg Ryan as Kay, James Caan as Roy and Gwyneth Paltrow as Ginnie; the credited cast numbers thirty. Paula Weinstein and Mark Rosenberg produced for Paramount, Spring Creek Pictures and Mirage.
Released in November 1993, the film runs 126 minutes and took in about 10 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 from roughly 6,700 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from a much smaller group of voters. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 26 reviews sits close to those audience scores.
