Morvern Callar

Morvern Callar works at a supermarket in a small Scottish port town. One morning she wakes beside her boyfriend and finds that he has killed himself while she slept, leaving behind a note on his computer, his credit card, and the manuscript of a novel he had just finished. Rather than report his death, she keeps the body in the house, takes the money, and passes the manuscript off as her own work. Selling the novel brings her a substantial advance, and she leaves her old life behind for a trip abroad.

Lynne Ramsay directed the film, her second feature after Ratcatcher, working from a screenplay she wrote with Liana Dognini. Samantha Morton plays the title role, with Kathleen McDermott, Raife Patrick Burchell, Dan Cadan, Carolyn Calder and Steven Cardwell among the credited cast. The production was a British and Canadian co-production involving BBC Film, Alliance Atlantis, Scottish Screen and Company Pictures.

The film drew a critics' rating of 7.2/10 from 87 reviews, ahead of the audience scores of 6.8/10 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and 6.7/10 on TMDB, though the gap between the two is modest. Ramsay went on to direct We Need to Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here and Die My Love.
