Sunflower
Short description
Sunflower is a drama set around the Second World War, following Giovanna, a married woman living near Milan. Her husband Antonio is sent to the Russian front, and when he fails to return after the war, she refuses to accept that he is dead. Flashbacks trace their courtship and hasty marriage, made partly in the hope of securing a deferment from military service, and his attempts to avoid being called up. Some years after the fighting ends, with still no word of him, Giovanna travels to Russia to search for him.
The film was directed by Vittorio De Sica, released in 1970 and standing eleventh in the chronological list of his features, after The Witches. Sophia Loren plays Giovanna and Marcello Mastroianni plays Antonio, with Ludmila Savelyeva and Galina Andreeva among the supporting cast. The screenplay was written by Tonino Guerra, Gio Mdi and Cesare Zavattini, and the production was an international one, credited to companies in Italy, the United States, France and the Soviet Union, with Arthur Cohn and Carlo Ponti as producers.
