Shame

Shame, released internationally under its original Swedish title Skammen, is a war drama from 1968. It follows Jan and Eva Rosenberg, two former violinists whose marriage is strained by the pressures of a civil war engulfing their country. They have retreated to a farm on a rural island, hoping to keep the conflict at a distance and live quietly, but the fighting steadily encroaches on their lives. Soldiers arrive, the couple is arrested on suspicion of aiding the rebels, and an old acquaintance in command of the island's defense does nothing to ease their situation. The film examines how people respond when war strips away the routines and illusions that hold a life together.

Ingmar Bergman directed and wrote the film, the sixteenth of the twenty-four features he directed in chronological order, coming between Hour of the Wolf and The Passion of Anna. Liv Ullmann plays Eva and Max von Sydow plays Jan, with Gunnar Björnstrand as Jacobi among a credited cast of thirty-six. Lars-Owe Carlberg produced for SF Studios and Cinematograph AB on a budget of about three million dollars.

Reception has been strong across audiences and critics alike. On IMDb it holds 8 out of 10 from roughly sixteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.5 out of 10 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 8.4 out of 10 from twenty-seven reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores. The film runs 104 minutes.
