Short description

Captain Jack Sparrow is reunited with Angelica, a woman he knew years earlier, and he cannot tell whether her feelings for him are genuine or whether she is using him to track down the legendary Fountain of Youth. She forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the feared pirate Blackbeard, leaving Jack unsure which of the two poses the greater danger. The hunt draws in rival parties with the same goal, among them Barbossa and a Spanish expedition, and the voyage brings mermaids and ancient mysteries along the way. The film is the fourth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, directed by Rob Marshall from a screenplay by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Johnny Depp returns as Jack Sparrow, with Penélope Cruz as Angelica, Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa, Ian McShane as Blackbeard, Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Sam Claflin as Philip. Marshall's earlier films, in order, include Annie, Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and Nine. With a budget of 250 million dollars, the film took about 1.05 billion dollars worldwide. Audience scores sit at 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 604,000 votes and 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB from over 15,000 votes, while critics' reviews average 5 out of 10 from 271 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Blackbeard’s ship – the *Queen Anne’s Revenge* – features the same galleon that previously depicted the *Black Pearl*.
  • The film is based on Tim Powers' novel "On Stranger Tides" (1987), which was published in Russia in 2011 under the title "On Strange Shores".
  • Penélope Cruz was initially the only actress considered for the role of Angélique; no one else was even considered. The actress agreed to work with Rob Marshall without even reading the script.
  • The film features a real historical figure – the pirate Blackbeard. In 2010, archaeologists discovered Blackbeard’s saber from his flagship, the *Queen Anne’s Revenge*, which had sunk.
  • Johnny Depp spent over $60,000 on jackets for the film crew to protect them from the cold weather.
  • Penélope Cruz's stunt double was her own sister, Mónica Cruz.
  • While working on the film, Penélope Cruz was pregnant, but this became noticeable only in September 2010. Problems with the wardrobe soon arose, and producers had to turn to her younger sister, Monica. It is claimed that Penélope Cruz was filmed in close-up, while her sister was used for full-body and distant shots.
  • Johnny Depp agreed to star in the film even before the script was written.
  • As part of preparation for filming, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey was forced to take English lessons, learn to swim, and master breathing techniques.
  • The film was shot on five different islands: Kauaʻi and Oʻahu in Hawaii; Puerto Rico, Palominito (a small island near the east coast of Puerto Rico), and in the island nation of Great Britain, far from a tropical paradise.
  • “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” was the first film in the franchise shot using Disney Digital 3D™ technology, and the first film shot entirely on a Red 3D three-dimensional camera (including both interior and exterior shots).
