• The first Marvel project not about the Avengers, developed by Walt Disney Pictures.
• The film is based on a team of characters from the comic book of the same name from 2008 (Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot), but with the participation of the character Yondu, from the original comics of 1969.
• Joel Edgerton, Eddie Redmayne, Jensen Ackles, Lee Pace, Wes Bentley, Jack Huston, Cam Gigandet, Sullivan Stapleton, Logan Marshall-Green, Garrett Hedlund, Chris Lowell, James Marsden, Jim Sturgess, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Aaron Paul, Glenn Howerton, Michael Rosenbaum, and John Krasinski auditioned for the role of Star-Lord.
• Olivia Wilde turned down the role of Gamora, and Gina Carano, Rachel Nichols, and Adrianne Palicki auditioned, but the role ultimately went to Zoe Saldana.
• Iron Man was planned to have a cameo role in this film (as he is the last of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics), but this idea was abandoned after Robert Downey Jr. said he might not play Tony Stark in the future.

• The props team spent four months searching for a cassette player that Peter Quill almost never parts with in the plot. In the end, they managed to find only 16 players in various conditions that were suitable for filming.
• Production designer Charles Wood and his team designed and built several large-scale sets for filming. The largest structure was the Kiln space prison, where all the members of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" first met. This three-level structure, which required more than 160 tons of steel to build. During post-production, the building was expanded by 60 meters.
• The Bell Aircraft X-1 rocket plane served as the prototype for the spaceship «Milano», belonging to Peter Quill. «Milano» is a complex, two-level set: the cockpit is located on the upper level, and the living quarters are below. Several workshops worked on building the ship for about two weeks. The ship's interior was intended not only to remind Peter of Earth but also to represent the latest in technological progress – the entire dashboard is decorated with high-quality materials, chrome, and leather, and externally, the ship resembles a racing car.
• Throughout the film's production, special effects makeup artists created approximately 1250 silicone prosthetics for faces. 50 makeup artists worked on set, divided into groups to create the look of each character.
• Around two thousand people were involved in filming the mass scenes.
• A team led by renowned props master Barry Gibbs worked on creating the artifact known as the «sphere». The outer body of the structure is made of aluminum coated with silver, which was first treated with an oxidizing solution and then drilled with numerous holes.
• Benicio Del Toro underwent hair and eyebrow bleaching to transform into the Collector.
• A team of five people worked on creating Drax's memorable look. Applying the prosthetic makeup, consisting of 18 separate facial and body pieces, took 4 hours daily. By the end of filming, Dave Bautista had spent a cumulative total of about 7 days in the makeup chair.
• Vin Diesel voiced Groot in several languages, including Russian.
• In the scene in the Dark Aster Mine, where Peter Quill is alone with Gamora, Quill mentions a legend in which «Kevin Bacon taught an entire city of puffed-up turkeys the art of dance». This is clearly a reference to the film «Footloose» (1984).
• When Peter goes into outer space to save Gamora, ice and frost appear on his face, which is natural, but as soon as they board another spaceship, there is no ice or moisture on Peter’s face.
• At the very beginning, when Star-Lord goes to steal the sphere, he grabs a rat and uses it as a microphone. In the next shot, the rat is gone, his hands are empty, then – it's there again.
