Short description
Peter Quill, an adventurer living far from Earth, steals a mysterious orb. The artifact is coveted by Ronan, a powerful and ruthless figure whose plans put the whole universe at risk, and Quill soon becomes the target of a galaxy-wide manhunt. To survive, he has to work with four unlikely outcasts: the heavily armed Rocket, the tree-like Groot, the deadly and secretive Gamora, and the vengeful Drax. When Quill grasps what the orb truly holds and how dangerous it is, he tries to turn this quarrelsome group into a team capable of standing against Ronan.
James Gunn directed the film and co-wrote it with Nicole Perlman, with Kevin Feige producing for Marvel Studios. It was Gunn's fourth feature, following Slither, Super and Movie 43, and it opened the way for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and later entries in the series. Chris Pratt plays Quill, with Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel voicing Groot, Bradley Cooper voicing Rocket and Lee Pace as Ronan. The production carried a budget of 170 million dollars and returned 773 million dollars worldwide.
Audiences received it warmly: on IMDb it holds 8 out of 10 from 1.4 million votes, and on TMDB 7.9 out of 10 from more than 30,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 from 337 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

- The first Marvel project not about the Avengers, developed by Walt Disney Pictures.
- The film is based on a team of characters from the comic book of the same name from 2008 (Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot), but with the participation of the character Yondu, from the original comics of 1969.
- Joel Edgerton, Eddie Redmayne, Jensen Ackles, Lee Pace, Wes Bentley, Jack Huston, Cam Gigandet, Sullivan Stapleton, Logan Marshall-Green, Garrett Hedlund, Chris Lowell, James Marsden, Jim Sturgess, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Aaron Paul, Glenn Howerton, Michael Rosenbaum, and John Krasinski auditioned for the role of Star-Lord.
- Olivia Wilde turned down the role of Gamora, and Gina Carano, Rachel Nichols, and Adrianne Palicki auditioned, but the role ultimately went to Zoe Saldana.
- Iron Man was planned to have a cameo role in this film (as he is the last of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics), but this idea was abandoned after Robert Downey Jr. said he might not play Tony Stark in the future.
- To prepare for her role as Nebula, Karen Gillan had to shave her head.
- James Gunn announced on his Facebook page that, unlike most films, some scenes in this film will be shot after the music is written by Tyler Bates.
- Djimon Hounsou agreed to take on a role in this film for the sake of his young son, who simply adores superheroes and once shocked his father by saying he wanted to be white in order to become Spider-Man, because Spider-Man has white skin.
- As part of preparation for the film, Chris Pratt underwent 6 months of training and a strict diet, losing about 27 kg as a result. Pratt said it wasn't easy, but when he saw how his bare-chested character looked on screen, he realized it was worth it.
- Adam Sandler, David Tennant, Charlto Copley, Jim Carrey, and H. Jon Benjamin were considered as candidates to voice Rocket.
- During filming, music composed by Tyler Bates specifically for the film was constantly played on set. According to director James Gunn, it is precisely the music that helps create a unique atmosphere on set, which sets the whole team in the right mood. By the way, in addition to the original soundtrack, the music department made a selection of popular songs from the 70s, which Peter Quill constantly listens to on his old cassette player.
- The props team spent four months searching for a cassette player that Peter Quill almost never parts with in the plot. In the end, they managed to find only 16 players in various conditions that were suitable for filming.
- Throughout the film's production, special effects makeup artists created approximately 1250 silicone prosthetics for faces. 50 makeup artists worked on set, divided into groups to create the look of each character.
- Around two thousand people were involved in filming the mass scenes.
- Benicio Del Toro underwent hair and eyebrow bleaching to transform into the Collector.
- A team of five people worked on creating Drax's memorable look. Applying the prosthetic makeup, consisting of 18 separate facial and body pieces, took 4 hours daily. By the end of filming, Dave Bautista had spent a cumulative total of about 7 days in the makeup chair.
- Vin Diesel voiced Groot in several languages, including Russian.
- When Peter goes into outer space to save Gamora, ice and frost appear on his face, which is natural, but as soon as they board another spaceship, there is no ice or moisture on Peter’s face.
- At the very beginning, when Star-Lord goes to steal the sphere, he grabs a rat and uses it as a microphone. In the next shot, the rat is gone, his hands are empty, then – it's there again.
- Isaiah Mustafa, Brian Wade, and Jason Momoa were considered for the role of Drax.
- Director James Gunn noted that "Iron Man" (2008) served as a source of inspiration for him when creating this film.
- During a visit to the 18th Nantucket Film Festival, Glenn Close said she agreed to take on a role in "Guardians of the Galaxy" because it would allow her to appear in a film of a genre she truly enjoys.
- Bradley Cooper noted that his voicing of Rocket was influenced by his impression of Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci)'s character from "Goodfellas" (1990).
- Benicio del Toro described his character as "Liberace in outer space".
- According to producer Victoria Alonso, the characters of Rocket and Groot were created using a combination of motion capture technology and rotoscoping. The role of Rocket was performed by James Gunn's brother, Sean Gunn.
- Production designer Charles Wood and his team designed and built several large-scale sets for the film. The largest structure was the 'Kyln' space prison, where the Guardians of the Galaxy first met. This three-level structure required over 160 tons of steel to build. During post-production, the building was extended by 60 meters.
- The spaceship 'Milano', belonging to Peter Quill, was modeled after the Bell Aircraft X-1 rocket plane. The 'Milano' is a complex, two-level set: the cockpit is located on the upper level, and the living quarters are below. Several workshops worked on building the ship for about two weeks. The interior of Peter's ship was designed not only to remind him of Earth, but also to represent the latest in technological advancement – the entire dashboard is finished with high-quality materials, chrome, and leather, and externally the ship resembles a racing car.
- A team led by renowned prop master Barry Gibbs worked on creating the artifact known as 'the sphere'. The outer shell of the structure is made of aluminum coated with silver, which was first treated with an oxidizing solution and then drilled with numerous holes.
- In the scene in the Knowhere mines, where Peter Quill is alone with Gamora, Quill mentions a legend in which 'Kevin Bacon taught an entire town of inflated turkeys the art of dance.' This is, of course, a reference to the film 'Footloose' (1984).
