Short description

Charro! is a 1969 American Western about Jess Wade, a former outlaw who has settled down and taken a job as an auxiliary sheriff, hoping for a quiet life with his girlfriend Tracey. His old gang, led by Vince Hackett, steals a valuable cannon from Mexico and pins the crime on Wade after he refuses to take part. Shunned by the town and hunted for a theft he did not commit, he sets out to clear his name. The film was directed, written and produced by Charles Marquis Warren and was released in March 1969. It runs 98 minutes. Elvis Presley stars as Jess Wade, with Ina Balin as Tracey Winters, Victor French as Vince Hackett, Barbara Werle as Mrs. Sara Ramsey, Solomon Sturges as Billy Roy Hackett and Lynn Kellogg as Marcie, among a credited cast of twenty. The film took about 3 million dollars at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 2,700 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 5.4 out of 10 from around 54 votes. Audience response is therefore mixed, with the two sites broadly agreeing on a middling score.

What's left behind the scenes

  • It was originally intended that the film would become the 421st episode of the 1990s TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (abbreviated as MST3K, sometimes MST 3000 or MST 3K), however, the episode was replaced by the 1965 film 'The Unstoppable Monster'.
  • Elvis Presley performed all of his own stunts.
  • Elvis Presley disliked having to wear a beard for the plot so much that, in a show of solidarity, all the film's actors and even Presley's manager, Tom Parker (1909-1997), grew beards as well.
