The Haunting in Connecticut

The Campbell family moves to upstate Connecticut to be closer to the clinic where teenage son Matt is being treated for cancer. The cost of his care has left the family under financial and emotional strain, and the Victorian house they rent is meant to ease the daily commute rather than serve as a permanent home. What they do not know is that the building once operated as a funeral parlor, and that unsettling events took place there. Matt is the first to notice strange occurrences, and before long the rest of the household is confronted by phenomena they initially attribute to stress. The family eventually seeks outside help to understand what is happening in the house.

Peter Cornwell directed the film, which was written by Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe and produced by Paul Brooks, Andrew Trapani and Daniel Farrands. It was Cornwell's first feature, followed years later by Mercy. Virginia Madsen plays Sara Campbell and Kyle Gallner plays Matt, with Martin Donovan as Peter Campbell, Amanda Crew as Wendy, Elias Koteas as Reverend Popescu and Sophi Knight as Mary Campbell.

Released in March 2009, the film had a budget of about 10 million dollars and took roughly 78 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a horror title at that scale. On IMDb it holds 5.9/10 from around 68,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2/10 from a much smaller base of about 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4/10 from 104 reviews places it below both audience measures.
